General objectives

By the end of the workshop, students will be able to:

  1. Define the fundamental concepts of taxonomy, nomenclature, and phylogeny in prokaryotes.
  2. Differentiate between phenotypic, genotypic, and phylogenetic approaches used in microbial systematics.
  3. Classify prokaryotic organisms using standard taxonomic ranks (domain, phylum, class, order, family, genus, species).
  4. Apply basic laboratory and bioinformatics tools for the identification and classification of prokaryotes.
  5. Analyze molecular data (e.g., 16S rRNA sequences) to infer phylogenetic relationships.
  6. Compare traditional classification methods with modern genomic approaches.
  7. Interpret taxonomic keys and databases for accurate identification of bacterial and archaeal strains.
  8. Evaluate the importance of prokaryotic systematics in clinical, environmental, and industrial microbiology.
