Learning objectives – Lactic Acid Bacteria
By the end of this session, students will be able to:
- Describe the general characteristics of lactic acid bacteria (morphology, Gram reaction, and oxygen requirements).
- Recognize typical colony morphology on selective media (e.g., GYC, Carr agar).
- Perform microscopic observations to identify cell shape and arrangement.
- Conduct key biochemical tests for identification (oxidation of ethanol to acetic acid, catalase test, growth on specific carbon sources).
- Interpret laboratory results to differentiate acetic lactic acid bacteria from other Gram-negative bacteria.
- Apply aseptic techniques and laboratory safety procedures during bacterial manipulations.
- Record and analyze experimental observations accurately.
- Communicate findings clearly using appropriate microbiological terminology.
